Intro to Immersive Technology

Course Description
Introduction to Immersive Technology is a unique and intensive 3-week program intended for individuals serious about getting up to speed fast on this area of explosive growth across a variety of industries.  This non-credit course is designed to allow participants to earn 3 credits toward the Lethbridge College Virtual and Augmented Reality Certificate program recently approved by Alberta Advanced Education and launching in fall 2019. 

The set-up of multiple VR platforms, use of immersive technology for various applications and build, as well as exploration of an immersive environment is included in the course.  Students will meet, interact and learn best practices with industry professionals in Virtual Reality.  The course will also identify historic milestones of immersive technology and industry terminology.


Outcomes

  • Define and understand relevant terminology while identifying key historical advances in immersive technology.
  • Effectively configure and operate mobile, desktop and stand-alone VR systems.
  • Develop a basic web-based virtual reality experience for use on a virtual reality device.
  • Research Industry applications to make informed decisions on program project projects.
  • Evaluate physical limitations and user considerations for a variety of immersive software development platforms in order to understand and identify the software selection process appropriate for the end user.


Delivery Format

This course takes an innovative approach to delivery that combines multiple formats to maximize the learning experience. Portions of this course are taught in Virtual Reality, online both synchronous and asynchronous, and one full day onsite at Lethbridge College for hands-on training with professional hardware.

Prerequisites
Each participante must purchase their own headset. The recommended headset is the Oculus Go, but the following headsets are acceptable as well; Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, or Windows Mixed Reality.

 

Notes

Course work will require the use of a personal computer (desktop or laptop) to complete assignments.
