ClassGraphic Description

So, you’ve got a character and want to put it in your game. Before you do that, there’s an important step all character artists take between sculpting and rigging. That is retopology. In the 3D Character Retopology course, you’ll take a character body mesh - perhaps, the one you created in the 3D Character Body Sculpting (Stylized) course - and apply retopology methods to it. First, however, you’ll learn what retopology is. Then you’ll apply those practices to your mesh to allow your character to be rigged with ease. It’s a crucial part of the 3D pipeline, and one of the more technical components of creating a character.

Possible Deliverable - In this course, students will learn about proper body edge flow for rigging, and they’ll start the retopology process. They will use the Quad Draw tool in Maya, along with symmetry, to retopologize a stylized character body with ease. Many automated tools exist, but to achieve proper edge flow, it’s best students tackle this process manually, as it helps them learn what’s required of their role in the greater pipeline.

Note: This course will use Maya as its primary software. The hotkeys and navigation tools will vary from software-to-software. However, all principles learned in this course are applicable to other 3D software, including Blender.
